Early Years

At Newton, our youngest learners aged 1 - 5 are welcomed into a nurturing and stimulating environment, where they explore, learn and grow through play-based activities and personalised support.

Students build a strong foundation for both academic and emotional development by sparking curiosity and fostering creativity.

Our curriculum

In our Early Years curriculum, students engage in seven key Areas of Learning and Development, designed to build life skills and support them in reaching their full potential. Students experience a curriculum split into two stages, Nursery and Reception, with a strong emphasis on language learning.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Improving self-awareness and emotional skills

Students at Newton College focus on developing self-awareness, emotional regulation and social skills through the Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) programme. Through play-based activities, they learn to manage emotions, build positive relationships and cooperate with peers. This area fosters confidence, empathy and problem-solving abilities, forming the foundation for their growth and future learning and ensuring students are emotionally prepared for future challenges.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Physical Development

Developing motor skills through play

Encouraging physical development allows children to naturally explore their surroundings, sparking curiosity about the world around them.
Our custom-designed indoor and outdoor nature spaces offer just that - allowing children to enjoy themselves while picking up valuable skills along the way. As they learn to use equipment safely, they not only enhance their coordination but also gain the confidence to express themselves.

Communication and Language Development

Building strong language foundations

Students in Newton College's Early Years curriculum develop their communication and language skills as a core focus. Through daily conversations, shared readings, songs and symbolic games, they enrich their vocabulary and hone their listening and verbal expression skills, fostering active and engaging learning.

Literacy

Growing love for reading and writing

At Newton College, we know that literacy should inspire a love of reading and writing from the very beginning. Ever wondered how we make this happen?
In the Early Years, children start by reading simple sentences during their daily phonics classes, using new skills to decode and pronounce words with accuracy. Through engaging discussions, they explore stories and deepen their understanding of what they’ve read. When it's time for writing, they build on their phonics knowledge to create simple, meaningful sentences.

Literacy

Mathematics

Developing problem-solving abilities

In our approach to mathematics, little learners develop strong counting skills from 1 to 20, learning to sequence numbers and recognise what comes before or after. By counting forwards and backwards, they solve problems and grasp more advanced concepts such as doubling, halving and sharing.

Understanding the World

Fostering curiosity about nature and the environment

Children love sharing stories, whether about their own experiences or their family’s adventures. They enjoy exploring the world around them - observing animals, plants and objects, and asking why things happen the way they do. From exploring nature to discussing the changes they observe, learning about the world becomes an exciting and engaging journey.

Expressive Arts and Design

Inspiring creativity through hands-on projects

Our youngest learners love the joy of singing, making music and expressing themselves through dance. Using a variety of materials and tools, they explore their creativity in design and art. They also express their own ideas and feelings through role-play, storytelling and other creative arts. At Newton College, we celebrate this artistic exploration, nurturing a welcoming and inclusive community. Be prepared for artistic masterpieces that will soon be coming home for you to admire!
